Black Carbon Reference Materials Workshop
In June 2011, DMT sponsored a workshop on black carbon (soot) reference materials. Soot, a mixture of organic and elemental carbon, is a component of atmospheric aerosol particles whose radiative properties make it an important factor for mediating local, regional and global climate change and whose chemical reactivity when entering the respiratory system makes it a major culprit that endangers human health. Understanding the processes by which soot forms, evolves, and interacts with other particulate and gaseous species and alters radiative fluxes requires measurements with a variety of different instruments that can document soot properties. There are many such instruments that are used for this purpose, yet there are very few reference materials for calibrating or intercomparing them that have been universally accepted by the community of users that make these measurements. This workshop discussed the available reference materials and explored how better materials may be developed in the future.
DMT User's Group on SP2: Single‐Particle Soot Spectrometer

2011 DMT SP2 User's Group Workshop, Boulder, Colorado
In the Spring of 2011, DMT hosted a workshop on Depolarization Technology. This 3‐day workshop built on the past two years of successful meetings. Users shared presentations on SP2 applications and data analysis methods, and DMT experts shared the latest software and product information. The workshop featured a review of SP2 publications, a question-and-answer period, and hands‐on demonstrations and experiments.
